Jamia Mosque Nairobi Secretary-General AbdulBari Hamid has been officially honoured with a National Hero Award and Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding service to the nation.
The award was formally presented on Tuesday by Charles Wambia, Chief Executive Officer of the National Heroes Council, on behalf of President William Ruto, during a ceremony held at the Jamia Mosque Multipurpose Hall in Nairobi.
The event marked a moment of pride for the Jamia Mosque fraternity and the wider Muslim community.
Hamid was among 184 Kenyans recognised by President Ruto during the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui County for their contributions to national development, humanitarian service, and community empowerment.
In a statement, the National Heroes Council praised Hamid’s lifelong dedication to public service and his leadership in numerous community-based initiatives.
“As the Secretary-General of Jamia Mosque Nairobi, Hamid has spearheaded a remarkable array of humanitarian projects, including housing for displaced families, support for persons with disabilities through wheelchair donations, and the distribution of food and medical assistance to vulnerable communities,” the Council noted.
Speaking during the ceremony, Wambia lauded Hamid’s compassion and leadership, describing him as a role model for service-driven citizenship.
“The National Heroes Council takes great pride in honouring Kenyans who have made tangible and lasting contributions to our nation. We are committed to ensuring that recognition reaches every corner of the country, including the grassroots,” he said.
Sheikh Muhammad Warfa, Chairman of the Jamia Mosque Committee, expressed gratitude to the National Heroes Council for recognising Hamid’s service, saying the honour reflected the collective efforts of the Jamia community.
“On behalf of the Jamia Mosque Committee, we are truly grateful for the recognition of our Secretary-General’s selfless service and leadership. This award is not only his but a shared honour for the entire Jamia Mosque fraternity,” Sheikh Warfa said.
In his acceptance remarks, Hamid dedicated the award to the staff and leadership of Jamia Mosque Nairobi for their continued support in advancing humanitarian causes.
“This award belongs to the Jamia family — the staff, leadership, and all who work tirelessly to serve humanity. I am truly humbled,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by senior members of the Jamia Mosque Committee, including Deputy Chairman Abdullatif Essajee, Treasurer Billow Kerrow, Deputy Treasurer Khider Farouk Adam, Committee Member Abdulhamid Slatch, and Imam Sheikh Jamaluddin Osman, among others.
